Investigation of Groundwater Contamination
Background/The Study: Earth Forensics was retained by plaintiffs in litigation for the purpose of rendering opinions in the field of hydrology/hydrogeology as it relates to the chemicals of concern (COCs) identified as total chromium, hexavalent chromium, and arsenic emanating from a former industrial facility located in Merced, California. Earth Forensics also investigated potential groundwater surface water interactions, dust emissions from source site into residential neighborhood, and historical water sampling and procedures.
Results:
A summary of opinions included:
• The defendants did not effectively investigate, characterize, or identify the nature and extent of the contamination emanating from the former industrial facility and as a result the COCs migrated offsite resulting in exposure to plaintiffs.
• Well A was impacted by the COCs from the former industrial facility which entered the well resulting in a significant pathway of exposure to plaintiffs.
• Private/domestic wells utilized by plaintiffs were impacted by COCs from the former industrial facility resulting in significant pathways of exposure to those plaintiffs.
• The former industrial facility storm water retention pond, adjacent to a canal and waters of the United States, was impacted by COCs from the former industrial facility and is a pathway of exposure to plaintiffs.
