Hydrology Study of Cumulative Impacts
Background: Earth Forensics was hired by an engineering firm to aid in the evaluation and siting of a new City wastewater treatment plant. Earth Forensics was hired due to their long history of work within the City of Malibu and our extensive databases.
The Study: The City of Malibu began a significant undertaking of understanding the geology, hydrology, groundwater, groundwater chemistry of the Civic Center Area of Malibu. The project culminated in a final report that was presented to the City of Malibu and the State of California.
Earth Forensics scope of work included installing new monitoring wells to bedrock, geophysics of both the nearshore and offshore areas; aquifer testing of the primary aquifer; water chemistry of Malibu Creek, beach areas, shallow and deep groundwater; modeling of the system; and engineering analysis of the area as it related to the development of a Civic Center Wastewater Treatment plant and pipeline.
Results: Earth Forensics conducted all field efforts including, drilling oversight, aquifer testing and the aiding of the geophysics.

For This Type of Investigation, Earth Forensics utilizes its extensive field experience and technical know-how to design, construct, and install permanent and temporary groundwater monitoring wells for collection of groundwater samples.
Applications:
• Assess water quality
• Assess water chemistry
• Well maintenance and rehabilitation
• Underground Storage Tank (UST) Investigations
• Determine formation hydraulic connectivity for RBCA/MNA and remedial action design
• Cost-effective temporary samplers to define vertical and lateral extent of contamination
• Permanent monitoring wells
Site Reconnaissance
Optimizing placement and quantity of boreholes and wells to obtain the most reliable data requires site specific evaluation, including geological, hydrogeological, climatological, and subsurface conditions. In addition to the physical site conditions such as site access, utility locations, and potential hazards.
Permitting & Regulatory Requirements
Earth Forensics takes responsibility for permits, licensing, professional registration, and compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulatory procedures for drilling, well installation and well decommissioning.
Methodology/Drilling Methods
Earth Forensics takes great care in selecting the drilling method(s) and materials that will provide the most accurate representative data. Proper installation procedures, materials and methods ensure that samples are unbiased, the possibilities of subsurface or cross-contamination are eliminated or minimized and drilling costs are kept to a minimum.
Site Safety Plans
Site safety and health plans for drilling activities are unique to each project. Earth Forensics geologists prepare site specific safety plans to ensure that all personnel conform to safety and environmental procedures to protect workers, minimize waste, preserve the environment.
